Islam and Charity

Islam, a religion of peace and tranquility sheds special light on the importance of charity. Out of the five pillars, charity is the third pillar of Islam and is practiced by supporting the poor and needy. The word ‘zakat’ has been mentioned in the Quran innumerable times, reminding us that it is a “recognized right, for the needy and deprived”over our wealth (70:24-5)

Are we fulfilling our duties as a Muslim?

Often times, we are consumed in worldly desires to such an extent that we forget about the problems of our Muslim brothers and sisters in need. We flaunt our wealth in front of the poor and needy irrespective of the pain it may cause them.

The Holy Prophet (PBUH) “A charity is due for every joint in each person on every day the sun comes up: to act justly between two people is a charity; to help a man with his mount, lifting him onto it or hoisting up his belongings onto it, is a charity; a good word is a charity, and removing a harmful thing from the road is a charity. (Al-Bukhari, Muslim)

To understand its importance, we must first know the types of charity i.e. voluntary and obligatory. A person who is financially stable ought to give zakat to the poor. The other form, ‘sadaqah’ is a voluntary act performed by a Muslim with an intention to help the needy.

The Holy Prophet says ‘When a Muslim spends something on his family intending to receive Allah’s reward it is regarded as sadaqa for him – (Sahih Bukhari)

How can we give Charity?

We need to learn to be more empathetic, to provide a shoulder to our fellows, and to help them in times of distraught.

The Quran teaches us ‘Those who spend their wealth in Allah’s cause are like grains of corn which produce seven ears, each bearing a hundred grains. (Qur’an, 2:261)

A charitable act is rather simple to understand. There are different ways to give charity, other than offering Zakat:

  • Plant a tree that provides shade
  • Install a water cooler outside your home
  • Feed a poor person
  • Give sadaqah
  • Donate books to a school or orphanage
  • Donate supplies to homeless people.
